Preface

The book entilled ‘Measurement and Evaluation’ (Tyranny of Testing) written in English is an outgrowth of an earlier book written in Hindi. Actually, we were urged to move in this direction as a result of repeated request of our dear students and well-wishers by sole consideration that the field of ‘Measurement and Evaluation had got very much distorted at the hands of some authors in this area by their intention to make the books bulky they have unintentionally muddied the whole field with the result that the students have to waste much of their valuable time in sorting out the relevant material. Having reviewed the whole situation we arrived at a conclusion that there was a need to write a very crisp and precise book which the students should find handy from the point of view of examination.

The book in the present form describes all that is essential in the course in simple but scholarly language. The important concepts have been put in a concise and lucid manner to facilitate student’s understanding. Efforts have also been made to present material in an organized manner. Special efforts have been made to make the contents of the book relevant to syllabi of various universities in the country.

In short, the book may be considered a work of hope and promise as well as one of rightful concern for all those who are associated with the field and engaged in postgraduate studies.

We have tried to put together various pieces of knowledge found scatterd here and there in various books. Hence, we do not claim any originality in authoring this book. What we may claim by way of originality is only to help students acquire a solid backgroud of the subject and facilitating reader’s understanding at every stage.

We, unhesitatingly, say that we have received help from a number of authors, publishers and other persons in the form of ideas, criticism, encouragement, guidance and even material facilities. We are grateful to all of them.
